Welcome!
Welcome to the Kansas Alpha Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, located on the campus of the University of Kansas. Since 1903, ΣAE has a long and rich tradition of excellence at KU. We boast the newest chapter house of all fraternities and sororities, and we are also the closest fraternity house to campus. Students from over 10 different states located around the country call ΣAE home, making us one of the most diverse houses on the hill.
Are you interested in learning more about our brotherhood? We encourage you to check out our “Recruitment” page listed in the above menu. This is where you will learn more about ΣAE, with the opportunity to schedule a visit to tour our house, meet our members, and even eat dinner with us. There is also useful information for parents on our “Parents” page.
Alumni Members, please check out the “Alumni” web page of our site! You ARE welcome to stop by any time that you are in the Lawrence area, and we look forward to working with you as we establish the best Alumni Relations program on campus. From all of us at Kansas Alpha, we thank you for checking out our "new and improved" website. Contact information for our current officers is available here.
Our History
The Kansas Alpha Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon began as a local Fraternity called Zeta Tau. With the help of George H. Bunting, then the Province Zeta Archon, Kansas Alpha received it's charter at the Kansas City Convention on February 14, 1903. This made the chapter one of the four “Valentine Chapters,” which is still the case today.
Beginning with 17 members, the first residence for Kansas Alpha was at 1247 Ohio Street. At that time, as the World was engaged in "The War to End ALL Wars" in 1917, the current location was purchased and a new chapter house was built. This made Kansas Alpha the first fraternity with their own house at the University of Kansas.
In 1951, the house was enlarged and remodeled. This same house was replaced and doubled in size in 1969. However, the size of the chapter membership and the square footage of the chapter house became an issue within 20 short years, and something had to be done; something that was a monumental undertaking. That "something" became a reality in 1997, as the current house was built and dedicated, making it the newest and largest Greek house on campus! It remains so today! Come and visit us!
